Senior Performance Engineer

Responsys has an opening for a Senior Performance Engineer to join the Platform Engineering team in San Francisco. This senior role is responsible for characterizing and improving the system performance, availability, and scalability.
 
The individual will define, plan, drive, design, and implement initiatives for the performance characterization and tuning of the system; a complex distributed J2EE system that must scale upwards of 100 million transactions a day. The individual is expected to advise on architectural and application design impacting performance, identify and help solve performance issues, contribute to capacity planning, and develop monitoring and operational tools.
 
The individual must have a background of technical leadership in performance testing, analysis, and improvement of a distributed high-throughput J2EE/Linux/Unix system. They must have previously established a performance test framework, process, and methodology. This is very much a hands-on role; the individual must be comfortable with navigating the environment through a command line, install, script, run, and manage tools and the system under test. The individual must be proactive, produce high quality results, and be relied upon to get things done.
 
The position is located in downtown San Francisco with the requirement that 1 day a week is spent in the San Bruno office collaborating with other engineering and operations teams.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional related experience
  • Experience performance testing a distributed high-throughput J2EE/Linux/Unix system
  • Experience establishing a performance test framework, process, and methodology
  • Experience with performance analysis, modeling, instrumentation, profiling, troubleshooting
  • Experience with OS, JVM, middleware, and distributed system issues
  • Hands-on expertise using and scripting tools in a networked Linux/Unix environment
  • Deep knowledge of jawa, JMS, J2EE application servers
  • Deep knowledge of databases (Oracle, MySQL)
  • Strong foundation in networking, including TCP/IP
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to analyze and understand complex systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Works well both in a team and individually
  • Highly organized, self motivated, pro active, able to plan
  • Minimum of a B.S. in Computer Science or related field
 
Preferences

  • Expertise programming jawa in a J2EE and highly-concurrent environment

Database Administrator

Description of Position/Duties:
  • 24/7 on call support: On call is based on a weekly rotating schedule
  • Monitor and troubleshoot Microsoft SQL/Oracle Database performance and scalability issues.
  • Perform database upgrades and migrations
  • Implement backup / recovery procedures for new and existing environments
  • Develop Database administration automation scripts
  • Develop and maintain ETL processes to support the Data Warehouse on Microsoft SQL Server
  • Interact with the Customer Support and Professional Services Organizations in the capacity of Tier 2 Support for Customers
  • Identify and develop tools to assist in Production Support and Operations ability to troubleshoot Database and application related issues.
  • Document Standard Operating Procedures for Production Support/Operations team as required.
  • Provide design assistance to Engineering for new and existing releases

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in a technical area or 5-7 years equivalent experience
  • Programming in Perl, jawa and Python a plus
  • Expert experience of Microsoft SQL server with OLAP experience
  • Expert understanding of Oracle 9i, and 10g RDBMS on Sun Solaris
  • Oracle OLTP and Data Warehouse databases
  • Unix shell scripting and Windows Batch scripting to automate database administration tasks
  • Microsoft Stored procedure, PL/SQL, SQL Loader, and SQL experience
  • Ability to analyze and resolve data issues
  • Ability to troubleshoot and optimize customer SQL
  • Experience with terabyte databases a plus
  • Experience with MySQL with Replication and/or cluster server a plus
  • Experience with subversion a plus

Must be a team player with attribute to help as necessary
Self-motivate and able to adapt constantly changing environment
